About

Synopsis

The Fly (1986) is David Cronenberg's landmark sci-fi horror you can watch online on iFILM. Jeff Goldblum plays Seth Brundle, a reclusive scientist who builds a working teleportation device from scratch in his apartment. Early tests on objects go perfectly — until he decides to step inside himself.

What Brundle doesn't notice is the housefly that slips in with him. The machine reads two separate genomes and writes them into one. The change is gradual at first: sharper reflexes, strange hunger, fingernails that don't stay put. His girlfriend Veronica, a journalist played by Geena Davis, watches the man she loves rewrite himself cell by cell. John Getz rounds out the cast as her former editor, who can't stay out of the story even when it costs him.

Cronenberg took a B-movie premise from 1958 and turned it into something closer to a body-horror meditation on disease, obsession and the limits of ambition. Chris Walas's practical makeup effects won the Academy Award in 1987 and still hold up as a benchmark of the craft. Stream The Fly (1986) in full online on iFILM.
