Writer Brian Kessler (Duchovny) and his photographer girlfriend (Forbes) are driving cross-country, stopping at sites where famous serial killers once struck — research for a book Brian is desperate to finish. To split the gas money, they pick up two strangers: hulking, surly Early Grayce (Pitt) and his naive girlfriend Adele (Lewis). Early has just walked off parole. He has also just committed murder. Brian has no idea who is sitting in the back seat.
