Shot on an $18 million budget, the film grossed over $74 million worldwide. Woo brought his signature slow-motion gunplay, paired pistols, and airborne doves to a mainstream Hollywood set — though Universal re-cut the film heavily without his approval, turning the production into one of cinema's better-known director-studio standoffs.
