Synopsis
The New World (2005) is Terrence Malick's historical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Virginia, 1607: three English ships drop anchor on a shore where the Powhatan people have lived for countless generations.
Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell) is taken captive and meets the chief's young daughter, the girl history would call Pocahontas (newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher). Their bond grows as the Jamestown fort starves and trust between settlers and natives curdles into open war. Later a tobacco planter, John Rolfe (Christian Bale), steps into her life and changes its course. Christopher Plummer rounds out the cast as the stern Captain Newport.
Malick tells most of it without dialogue. Emmanuel Lubezki's camera drinks in light, grass and river while the story drifts past in hushed voiceover. This is no swashbuckling epic but a meditation on love and the loss of an entire world, made for viewers who surrender to rhythm over plot. Stream The New World (2005) online on iFILM.
