Synopsis
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) — watch online on iFILM. Director Jon Avnet adapted Fannie Flagg's novel into a Drama released by Universal Pictures, starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary-Louise Parker, and Mary Stuart Masterson. Runtime: 130 minutes.
Middle-aged housewife Evelyn Couch feels invisible — to her husband, to herself. A hospital visit leads her to Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman with a gift for stories. Ninny takes Evelyn back to a small Alabama town in the 1920s: to the café called Whistle Stop, where feisty Idgie Threadgoode and gentle Ruth Jamison ran the place together and made the best fried green tomatoes in the county. Idgie pulled Ruth out of an abusive marriage. They built something real in a world stacked against them — dealing with poverty, racial injustice, and grief along the way.
The film earned two Oscar nominations: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Tandy. The Bates-Tandy pairing became one of the decade's most memorable. Watch Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) on iFILM — a sharp, tender story about women who hold each other up, told across decades.
