Synopsis
The Mauritanian (2021) is Kevin Macdonald's legal thriller, and you can watch online on iFILM. Mohamedou Ould Slahi sits in a Guantanamo cell year after year with no trial, no charge filed against him, and no release date in sight.
Defense attorney Nancy Hollander, played by Jodie Foster, takes the case alongside a younger associate. Across from them is a military prosecutor, Benedict Cumberbatch, who starts losing his certainty once he learns how the confessions were pulled out of the prisoner. Tahar Rahim carries the whole film as Slahi, leaving you unsure whether you are watching a witness to an era or the man the case files insist he is. Between interrogations and court filings, what was done to him in those first months comes into focus.
It draws on the memoir Slahi wrote inside his cell, pages of which censors blacked out before it ever reached print. The film does not beg for sympathy or pre-clear its subject; it simply shows what happens to a person, and to the law, when suspicion outweighs proof. Rahim's performance earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. Stream The Mauritanian (2021) online on iFILM.
