Under the Skin

Under the Skin (2014) is Jonathan Glazer's science-fiction drama you can watch online on iFILM. A creature wearing the shape of a young woman drives a battered van across Scotland, picking up lonely men. Why she does it is something she does not yet grasp herself.

Scarlett Johansson plays the nameless woman. She cruises the streets of Glasgow and the rain-slicked motorways, chatting up strangers and quietly working out which of them has no one waiting at home. The ones nobody will miss she leads away, into a darkness that looks like nothing on Earth. Several of these encounters were filmed with a hidden camera and real passersby who had no idea who sat beside them. Then something human starts to stir in the predator, and the hunt turns back on her.

Glazer adapted Michel Faber's novel, stripping away almost all explanation and leaving sound, cold and gaze in its place. Mica Levi wrote the unnerving score. This one is not for everyone: slow, withholding, closer to an experience than a plot. Stream Under the Skin online on iFILM.
