Synopsis

Minari (2021) is an A24 family drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Steven Yeun and Yuh-jung Youn. Runtime: 115 minutes.

The Yi family leaves California for a raw patch of Arkansas land — the father, Jacob, has bought it on faith and plans to build a Korean vegetable farm from scratch. His wife Monica thinks this is a bad idea. Their youngest son David has a heart condition. Then Grandma flies in from Korea: loud, card-sharp, not remotely grandmotherly in any way David expected — and somehow exactly what the family needs. Minari, the wild herb that takes root wherever it lands, gives the film its quiet thesis about what belonging actually means.

Lee Isaac Chung drew the story from his own childhood in Arkansas, and that specificity is what carries it. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and gave Yuh-jung Youn the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress — the first Korean actor to win in that category.
