Once Chiyoko starts telling her story, the walls between her life and her films collapse. The same image recurs across eras — feudal Japan, the turbulent 1930s, outer space — as she chases a man she met only once and promised to return that key to. The interviewer and his cameraman tumble straight into her recollections, becoming bit players inside someone else's epic.

Kon braids memory and fiction into a single seamless run, an editing trick later echoed in Nolan's Inception.
