The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) is a horror-comedy from director Drew Goddard that you can watch online on iFILM. Five college friends drive out to an isolated cabin for the weekend, and it opens exactly like every slasher you've seen: beer, a campfire, a cellar full of strange relics.

Then the formula starts to crack. Someone, it turns out, is watching every move they make, and the jock, the brain, the fool, the beauty and the good girl aren't quite acting of their own free will. Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz play victims following a script written somewhere off-screen. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford show up as two tired men in ties for whom all this carnage is just another shift at the office.

Goddard co-wrote the screenplay with Joss Whedon, and the result both takes the horror genre apart bolt by bolt and works as a brisk scare of its own, building to an ending almost nobody calls. Sigourney Weaver turns up to cap the whole prank on the rules. Ninety-five minutes that change how you watch any cabin-in-the-woods movie afterward.
