Synopsis
Becoming Jane (2007) is a period romance you can watch online on iFILM, with Anne Hathaway as a twenty-year-old Jane Austen years before she ever published a word.
It's 1795, and Jane's cash-strapped family needs her to marry well; the dull nephew of imperious Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith) is the safe choice. Then she meets Tom Lefroy, a quick-tongued, broke Irish law student played by James McAvoy. He mocks her reading, argues with her until sparks fly, and shows her what real feeling costs. The trouble is simple and brutal: with no money on either side, love and a future cannot both survive.
Director Julian Jarrold treats this less as biography than as a what-if — the idea that Austen's novels grew out of a romance her own life denied her. Julie Walters and James Cromwell play her parents, and the English countryside feels lived-in rather than picturesque. If Pride and Prejudice is your comfort read, this hits the same wry, aching notes about the author herself. Stream Becoming Jane (2007) online on iFILM.
