William Munny walked away from killing years ago. Now he's a broke widower trying and failing to raise hogs on a muddy Kansas plot, with two kids and no good options. A young drifter called the Schofield Kid shows up with a job: two cowboys cut up a prostitute in the town of Big Whiskey, and the women there have pooled their savings for whoever brings them to account. Munny pulls in his old partner Ned Logan — Morgan Freeman — and they ride. Waiting in Big Whiskey is Sheriff Little Bill Daggett: Hackman playing a man who builds his own house badly, beats prisoners with his fists, and genuinely believes he is the law.

Screenwriter David Webb Peoples wrote the script in the mid-1970s. Eastwood sat on it for over a decade, saying he wanted to wait until he was old enough for the part.
