Synopsis
Melancholia (2011) is Lars von Trier's end-of-the-world drama you can watch online on iFILM. It opens with slow, painterly shots of Earth being wiped out, then rewinds to a wedding where the bride cannot make herself feel anything close to joy.
The film splits in two, each half named for a sister. In the first, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) hosts her own lavish reception at a country estate and quietly dismantles it over a single night, her depression heavier than any toast or fireworks. The second half shifts to Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who nurses her broken sister while tracking a rogue planet called Melancholia drifting toward Earth. As the collision nears, the two women trade places: the calmest person left is the one who stopped caring long ago.
The cast includes Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt. Dunst won Best Actress at Cannes for Justine. Von Trier made not a disaster movie but a study of depression, for which the apocalypse almost reads as relief. The tagline lands like a dare: it will change everything.
