Synopsis

The Wave (Die Welle, 2008) is a German thriller by Dennis Gansel that you can watch online on iFILM. A high-school history teacher runs a week-long lesson in autocracy. Within days, the lesson stops being a lesson.

Rainer Wenger (Jürgen Vogel) wants his bored students to feel how dictatorship actually takes hold, so he gives the class a uniform, a salute and a name: Die Welle, the Wave. At first it bonds them and it feels good. Then come the insiders and outsiders, the snitching, the fists. Lonely Tim (Frederick Lau) clings to the movement like a lifeline, while Karo (Jennifer Ulrich), who refuses to play along, becomes the enemy of her own friends.

The plot draws on the real Third Wave experiment that teacher Ron Jones ran with his California class back in 1967. Gansel resets it in present-day Germany and pushes it to the point where pulling the brakes is no longer simple. A blunt answer to anyone sure it could never happen here.
