Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder) edges from fear to fascination, while the town swings from adoration to suspicion just as quickly. Kim's boyfriend Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) has a simpler read on the situation: he wants to use Edward and does not care about the cost.

Tim Burton wrote the story with screenwriter Caroline Thompson, and Danny Elfman's score turns every scene into something between a lullaby and a nightmare.
