The Graduate

The Graduate (1967) is Mike Nichols' landmark drama you can watch online on iFILM. Benjamin Braddock comes home from college with a degree, a nice car and absolutely no idea what to do with his life.

Shy and adrift, Ben (Dustin Hoffman, in the role that made him a star) is seduced by Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner and twice his age. Their affair plays out in quiet hotel rooms until Ben falls for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's own daughter. Anne Bancroft makes the older woman cold and dangerous; Katharine Ross plays the daughter caught between her mother and her lover. A very young Richard Dreyfuss turns up in a bit part.

The film caught the restlessness of a generation fed up with its parents' comfort and won Nichols the Oscar for Best Director. The Simon and Garfunkel songs, "Mrs. Robinson," and that final shot on the bus became part of the culture. The joke underneath the laughs: Ben still has no idea what he wants.
