Synopsis
Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) is George Clooney's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Shot in stark black and white, it drops you into a CBS newsroom in the early 1950s, where anchor Edward R. Murrow chooses to say on air what his colleagues would rather leave unsaid.
The country is gripped by suspicion, careers collapsing over a whispered accusation, and Senator Joseph McCarthy wields a single insinuation like a weapon. Murrow (David Strathairn) and his producer Fred Friendly (Clooney himself) take to live broadcast against the senator, fully aware of what it could cost — sponsors, ratings, their own jobs. The film rarely leaves that smoke-filled studio: the battle is fought in words, film splices and tense glances rather than action.
Clooney made a movie arguing that journalism only matters when it is willing to anger the powerful. Robert Elswit's camera and real archival footage of McCarthy keep it teetering on the edge of documentary. Its six Oscar nominations and standing as one of the sharpest films about the press are well earned. If you love smart, talk-driven cinema, this one is for you. Stream Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) online on iFILM.
