Synopsis

A Tale of Two Sisters (장화, 홍련, 2003) is a South Korean psychological horror film you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Kim Jee-woon and produced by Bom Film Productions, it draws on a centuries-old Korean folk story — Janghwa and Hongryeon — and twists it into something far darker than its fairy-tale origins suggest.

Sisters Su-mi (Lim Soo-jung) and Su-yeon (Moon Geun-young) come home to their father's lakeside house after a long time away. Their stepmother Eun-joo, played with cold precision by Yum Jung-ah, makes no effort to hide her contempt. Nights in the house bring strange noises, a figure under the kitchen sink, and questions the girls can't answer — about what happened before they left, and whether they're truly the only ones still inside these walls.

The 115-minute film became the first Korean horror title to secure wide US theatrical distribution. Kim Jee-woon built the script on deliberate misdirection: the horror isn't in jump-scares but in the slow collapse of what's real. It rewards a second viewing.
