Handed the killing of a family of Senegalese immigrants, the lieutenant lurches between witnesses, dealers and his own hallucinations, gun shoved in his waistband, the law more a suggestion than a job. Eva Mendes plays his girlfriend; Val Kilmer is the partner happy to look the other way.

Herzog claimed he never watched Abel Ferrara's earlier film of the same name, and this isn't a remake but a separate fever dream, complete with iguanas in frame and a crooked grin where a moral should be.
