Synopsis

Christiane F. (1981) is a West German drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Uli Edel adapted the real memoir of Christiane Felscherinow, a Berlin teenager whose account of life on the city's heroin circuit was published in 1978 and became a generation-defining document. Natja Brunckhorst plays Christiane, fourteen years old when the story begins.

She lives with her mother in a concrete high-rise on the outskirts of West Berlin, drawn to Sound — a fashionable disco that doesn't check IDs. There she meets Detlef, whose friends are already using. The slide from curiosity to daily dependency is shown without editorial comment, and that restraint is what makes it disturbing. The scene shifts eventually to the area around the Zoologischer Garten station, where Christiane and Detlef survive by selling sex. David Bowie, whose music runs through the film, appears in a concert sequence.

Edel's 138-minute film landed in German cinemas at a moment when addiction was still discussed in whispers. Brunckhorst's performance has the kind of raw specificity that fiction rarely achieves — this feels observed, not scripted. Stream Christiane F. (1981) online on iFILM.
