Dustin Hoffman plays a father who once barely had a minute for his family and now has to learn French toast, the school run, and how not to snap when the job and the home pull him in opposite directions. Slowly, he and little Billy build something real. Then Joanna (Meryl Streep) comes back. She has found her footing and she wants her boy returned. What follows is a custody trial that strips both parents bare, with a stranger in a robe left to decide who keeps the child.

The film took five Academy Awards, among them Best Picture, Best Director, and acting wins for Hoffman and Streep. The kitchen scene where father and son fight over ice cream runs on Hoffman's raw improvisation. It was one of the first films to show divorce honestly through a father's eyes.
