Wealthy industrialist Ross Webster wants to corner the world's oil supply, and the only thing standing in his way is Superman. He recruits Gus Gorman — an accidental computer genius who first got noticed by rerouting payroll fractions into his own account. Gus synthesises kryptonite, but the formula is off, and the result turns the Man of Steel mean, slovenly, and self-destructive. The film's most memorable stretch is Superman versus his own darker half, fought out in a junkyard.

Richard Pryor brings his free-form stand-up energy to a blockbuster franchise, which makes for an odd but entertaining combination. Annette O'Toole joins the cast as Clark Kent's high-school sweetheart Lana Lang. The film is lighter in tone than its predecessors and leans hard into comedy, while still delivering the flying sequences and climactic supercomputer battle the tagline promises.
