Best friends Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) are adrift for the summer: their girlfriends have gone to Europe, the days are long and slow. At a wedding they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú), a Spanish woman a decade older whose marriage is quietly falling apart. The boys invent a perfect beach called Boca del Cielo and dare her to come along. She calls their bluff. What starts as a sunlit flirtation turns competitive, then tender, then complicated in ways none of them expected.

Cuarón and his brother Carlos wrote the screenplay together; cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki keeps the camera loose and alive, catching the roadside Mexico that tourists never see — poverty, military checkpoints, lives interrupted — while the three passengers negotiate desire and friendship in the front seat.
