Synopsis
Woman in Gold (2015) is a British drama directed by Simon Curtis — watch it online on iFILM. Helen Mirren plays Maria Altmann, an elderly Austrian-Jewish refugee living in Los Angeles who decides, well into her eighties, to pursue the art collection seized from her family's Vienna home in 1938.
The centrepiece is a Klimt portrait of her aunt Adele — a gilded, intimate canvas that the Austrian government had displayed for decades as part of the national collection. Maria enlists a young attorney with no experience in international restitution law; Ryan Reynolds plays him as someone who slowly grasps the weight of what he's agreed to. Their case winds from Vienna archives through the US Supreme Court in a battle that took the real Altmann family years to win.
The actual ruling came in 2006, and the painting sold at Christie's shortly after for a record price. Mirren carries every scene with a mix of dry wit and undissolved grief — it's her restraint, not the courtroom drama, that makes the film worth watching. Stream Woman in Gold (2015) on iFILM.
