Kenai is a young hunter whose spirit totem is the bear — a symbol he resents. When he kills a bear out of anger, the ancestral spirits transform him into one as punishment. His brother Denahi now tracks him as prey. A chatty bear cub named Koda latches on and refuses to leave. The two make their way north toward a salmon run where bears gather from across the wilderness, and somewhere along the trail Kenai begins to understand what his totem actually meant.
