The El Royale has seen better days. A faded gimmick splits it down the state border, so guests pick a room on whichever side they like. On one rainy 1969 evening it fills up with a priest whose hands shake, a soul singer named Darlene, a fast-talking vacuum salesman and a prickly young woman from the South — watched over by a jittery desk clerk. Every one of them is hiding something. Then a charismatic cult leader walks in and the night comes apart. Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm and Chris Hemsworth play out the standoff.
