Synopsis

Luis Antonio Vargas, a prosperous Cuban merchant played by Banderas, arranges a marriage by correspondence with an American woman. When she steps off the boat, she looks nothing like her photograph and claims the real Julia Russell sent her instead. She calls herself Bonnie. Jolie plays the role with layers of calculation underneath every tender scene. Thomas Jane appears as the detective circling the whole arrangement from the outside, pulling threads that keep unravelling.
The screenplay adapts Cornell Woolrich's 1947 novel "Waltz into Darkness" — the same source material François Truffaut used for "Mississippi Mermaid" in 1969. This 2001 version leans into the heat of the Jolie-Banderas pairing. Watch Original Sin online on iFILM.
