Synopsis
Gandhi (1982) is Richard Attenborough's historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Ben Kingsley plays the London-trained lawyer who gave up money and comfort to free India.
It opens in South Africa, where a young attorney is thrown off a train for the colour of his skin. That humiliation hardens into a method that reshaped the century: resistance without a single shot fired. The film tracks him from the salt march to the sea through partition to the gunshot of 30 January 1948. Around him stand a reporter played by Candice Bergen, British officials in John Gielgud and Trevor Howard, and an American journalist in Martin Sheen.
Shot across India with crowds in the hundreds of thousands, its funeral sequence remains one of the largest scenes ever filmed. Kingsley fasted and learned to spin thread for the part. The picture took eight Academy Awards, among them Best Picture and Best Actor. It runs nearly three and a half hours yet never drags. Stream Gandhi (1982) online on iFILM.
