Among the trapped is Kirito (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka), a solo player and former beta tester who knows the game's mechanics better than almost anyone. His path crosses with Asuna (Haruka Tomatsu), a skilled fighter rising through the Knights of the Blood guild, and the two form a bond under impossible circumstances.

The franchise spans multiple arcs beyond Aincrad — ALfheim Online, Gun Gale Online, and further worlds — with each arc shifting genre and stakes while keeping Kirito at the centre.
