The Crain family spent one summer inside Hill House and never recovered. Two decades on, the adult siblings are forced back together: eldest son Steven (Michiel Huisman) has built a career exploiting their shared past, undertaker Shirley (Elizabeth Reaser) keeps emotions locked in a casket, while twins Luke and Nell are fighting battles the others can barely see. The show cuts constantly between the parents' fateful renovation and the children's fractured present — Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as the young couple, Timothy Hutton as the haunted father they barely know.

Flanagan hides actual ghosts in the background of nearly every scene — still frames keep turning up new ones years after release.
